Current Conditions
The upper Colorado from Pumphouse down to Dotsero is fairly icy in spots and the fishing is poor to fair. There is some open water around State Bridge and Dotsero where the sun keeps the river free of ice..
A significant January thaw continues for the next week with temperatures in the 40's during the day. This is a great chance to get out and experience some good fishing during a tough time of year! The Lower Colorado will be the place to be for a mid-winter float trip!
We generally focus our efforts on the Lower Colorado River from Glenwood Springs down to Rifle during the winter. The Lower Colorado River below Glenwood Springs is fishing well and the clarity is good with only a little ice and slush. Midges are hatching daily. Nymphing with stoneflies, worms or eggs with a midge emerger trailer has been the hot ticket. Streamers are still moving some large fish.Float fishing offers the best way to cover water on this big river.
Guide Tip: When midges are hatching try suspending an emgerger up off the bottom well above you heavier fly.
