Type of Water: Freshwater
Species: Steelhead
This trip has been a long time in the making. Treven and I had a couple trip dates thast we had to reschedule starting from last Fall so I was so pumped to finally get him in on some Lake Erie Steel. Treven is a very accomplished fly angler and he was chomping at the bit to visit Steelhead Alley for the first time and he was finally here.
I decided to take Treven to the same stream that I took Rob and Jim to the day before. Why not right?? They caught lots of fish so Treven was bound to catch lots also. That was the optimist side of me but I'm always a little worried pounding the same water two days in a row when the fish are in holding mode in semi clear, low water. But I made the call and we were going for it.

We started in the same run that Jim had caught several fish out of the day before. I was hoping to have a repeat of the previous morning and get Treven his first Lake Erie Steelhead at first light. But that wasn't happening..at least not in this first run. We fished it for 10-15 minutes with nothing so we moved downstream to the next spot.
This next spot is a gorgeous waterfall hole and the fish hold in a particular little seam that I found when I pre-fished the stream the week before. It worked for Jim the day before when he hooked up and that would continue this morning because Treven was hooked up in a matter of minutes with his first ever Lake Erie Steelhead. Seeing that joy in peoples eyes will never ever get old for me!
That broke the ice for Treven and he continued to catch fish the rest of the morning. We fished to the same point downstream that I fished with Rob and Jim the day before and we took a quick break. I asked Treven if he would be interested in switching from egg patterns to a streamer and he was more than happy to. I know it doesn't sound smart to switch from a successful pattern to something totally different but if you've ever had a Steelhead crush a streamer before you understand.
Treven started working a run that he had just got done fishing with his egg pattern when a beauty of Steelhead came out of nowhere and hammered his streamer right in front of us!! What an incredible take and we were yipping like a couple school boys. Treven fished the bunny leach the whole way out and caught a bunch more fish and missed even more. What a way to end this unbelievable trip!
