Step 1
Here's the materials used.
Step 2
Put the bead on the hook and tie in the antennae leaving a small gap behind the eye.
Step 3
Add .25 lead to cover the thorax area and tie in the tail.
Step 4
Start the ginger wire on the side nearest you behind the lead and wrap back to the tail. (You always want the lighter color on the bottom of the weave. In order to achieve this, the lighter color must be tied in on the side nearest you.)
Step 5
Tie in the orange wire on the side opposite you and wrap back to the tail.
Step 6
Wrap the thread back to the bead making sure both the wire and the lead are covered. Don't let the wire show through or it will ruin the look of the weave and try to keep the thread body smooth and slightly tapered.
Step 7
Turn your vise so that it points toward you and invert the hook. The ginger wire will now be on your right side and the orange on your left.
Step 8
Pull the ginger wire across the belly of the fly tight against the orange wire and pull the orange wire over the ginger.
Step 9
Pull the orange wire across the top of the fly so that it points to your right.
Step 10
Pull the ginger wire across the belly of the fly so that it points to your right and again, wrap the orange wire over the top of the ginger.
Step 11
The first two wraps of the weave will look like this.
Step 12
Again, the orange wire crosses across the top of the fly so that it is now pointing to your left.
Step 13
Again, the ginger across the belly.
Step 14
Continue the weave up to the lead which mark the starting point of the thorax. Try to keep the weave tight. To keep the weave tight, when you wrap the orange over the ginger, pull the orange tightly toward the back of the fly to snug the ginger against the previous ginger wrap.Cross the wire over themselves and put a drop of glue on the joint.
Step 15
Dub a little red dyed squirrel. You just want enough to make a few turns on top of themselves to add a little bulk. You do this because you are about to add the first wing bud and you want the dubbing to hold the bud up a little so that it doesn't sit too flat on the back of the fly.
Step 16
Tie in the rubber legs on each side and bring the thread back to the dubbing where you will next tie in a wing bud.
Step 17
Cut a fairly thick strip of orange mottled oak thin skin. Cut one end into a point and tie the point in just in front of the dubbing and wrap the thin skin down back against the dubbing.
Step 18
Tie in a second wing bud with a little dubbing in front.
Step 19
Tie in the final wing bud.
Step 20
Dub up and around the legs to the bead and tie off. Clip the wing buds to shape with a small "v" notch in the center. Trim legs, tail and antennae to length. Finished.
