Red Salmon:
Red salmon, Reds or Sockeye Salmon are very abundant with 40 to 75,000 per day running the Kenia River. They are a fun fighting fish that lets you reel them in then until they see you, then they run like crazy, dragging line. Then it’s a slow haul back to repeat the crazy line dragging run. The Kenai River boasts over one million per year of sockeye salmon ave View more...raging between 8 and 12 pounds. The world record was 16 lb and was caught on the Kenia River. They arrive in late May and continue steadily well into August. With a run total of 3.8 million last year and daily totals 60,000 to 250,000 fish per day you’re sure to have an exciting time.
King Salmon:
The Kenai River is known as the home of the World Record King Salmon – 97 lb 4 oz ! They are usually running in the second week of June with the strongest numbers in the toward the last two weeks of June. Kings have been caught as late as August. The most Kings, also known as Chinook Salmon, are usually caught in the month of June.
Silver Salmon:
Silver salmon, Silvers or Coho salmon are very common in the Kenai River later in the summer. They are the most popular food fish. They fight hard; they jump wildly and make your reel scream. The Kenai River boasts runs from 25,000 to over 65,000 per day during July through the end of August. The average size is about 10 pounds but they do get over 20 pounds. The word record is 33 lb and 42.75 inches long . They feed heavily and very aggressively in the ocean and will hit lures even after they have stopped feeding in the rivers.
Pink Salmon:
Pink salmon, Pinks, Humpbacks or Humpies. There are millions of Pinks that run the Kenia every year, They are a fun fish to catch and put up a decent fight. During their spawning migration, males develop a pronounced humped back, hence their nickname “humpies.” Pink salmon average 4.8 pounds in weight. The record was 30 inches and 15 pounds caught on the Moose River a couple blocks North from Kenia Magic Lodge. The millions of pink or “humpback” salmon fill the river for three weeks in late July through late-August.

Rainbow Trout:
These fish are in the Kenai River year round. They average 8 to 12 pounds while many are in the 25 lb range; 31 inches in length is common. This is a very aggressive fish, they hit hard and fight like crazy. These guys just don’t give up. They feast on salmon eggs in late July thru September are commonly a blast to try and land. Regulations are tight. Catch and release is the norm. The State record was caught on the Kenia weighing 42 lb, 3 oz.
Dolly Varden:
Another fish that can be found year-round here on the Kenia River. These guys are scrappy, they hit hard. They are feasting on salmon eggs during the late summer months and they average about 9 to 12 pounds with the record being 27 lb 4 oz.
